Explore the possibilities of handbuilt ceramics in this relaxed and creative six-week class led by local artist JoAnn Flotemersch. Designed with beginners in mind and welcoming to returning students, this class combines guided projects with plenty of room for personal creativity and experimentation.
Each week, students will learn new handbuilding techniques through a combination of guided projects and independent work. JoAnn will demonstrate each technique step-by-step while helping students develop their own ideas and creative voice.
This session features a new set of projects, so it's a great option for students who have taken a previous handbuilding class with JoAnn and want to keep exploring new techniques and forms.
Projects & Schedule
Week 1 — Birdhouse
Build a functional ceramic birdhouse while learning slab-building and construction techniques. Students can experiment with shape, texture, openings, and decorative details to create a birdhouse that is both practical and uniquely their own.
Week 2 — Wind Chime or Rain Chain
Explore ways to create movement and sound with clay. Students can choose to make a ceramic wind chime or rain chain while learning techniques for creating and assembling multiple components.
Week 3 — Ceramic Platter
Create a handmade platter and explore shaping, texture, surface design, and decorative elements. Students can create a functional serving piece or let the form become a more sculptural work of art.
Week 4 — Flower Frog
Make a ceramic flower frog designed to help arrange and display flowers. Students will explore functional design while experimenting with shape, openings, texture, and decorative details.
Week 5 — Finishing & Glazing
Complete projects and prepare them for their final firing. Explore surface decoration and glazing techniques to bring your pieces together and give them a finished, personal character.
Week 6 — Final Finishing & Studio Time
Use the final class to complete any remaining work, refine details, and finish glazing. Students will have time to make final adjustments and prepare their pieces for the kiln.
Projects may vary slightly depending on drying and firing schedules, and students are encouraged to make each piece their own.
Whether you're brand new to clay or looking to expand your ceramic skills beyond the wheel, this class is designed to build confidence, curiosity, and comfort working with clay in a supportive studio environment.
By the end of the session, students will have created a collection of functional and decorative ceramic pieces while developing a stronger foundation in handbuilding techniques and creative problem-solving in clay.

Instructor: JoAnn Flotemersch
JoAnn has been working in ceramics for nearly two decades and has taught at a wide variety of studios and educational programs, including an Art Institute, city ceramics studio, high school, and community center. Her introduction to clay began under the guidance of a teacher from the Japanese ceramics tradition, whose thoughtful approach continues to influence her practice today.
In addition to teaching, JoAnn creates functional pottery, tile murals, and community-based public artworks. She brings a deep knowledge of both studio practice and technical processes — from wheel throwing and glazing to kiln loading and studio setup — along with a genuine love of helping others discover their own connection to clay.
