Explore the possibilities of handbuilt ceramics in this relaxed and creative six-week class led by local artist JoAnn Flotemersch. Designed with beginners in mind and welcoming to returning students, this class combines guided projects with plenty of room for personal creativity and experimentation.

Each week, students will learn new handbuilding techniques through a combination of guided projects and independent work. JoAnn will demonstrate each technique step-by-step while helping students develop their own ideas and creative voice.

Projects & Schedule

Week 1 — Coil & Ball-Built Bowls and Cups
Start with two approachable handbuilding techniques while creating functional bowls and cups. Explore shaping, smoothing, texture, and ways to develop the surface and form of your pieces.

Week 2 — Unique Vases & Slab-Building
Create a one-of-a-kind vase while exploring shape, texture, and surface design. JoAnn will demonstrate how to slab-build a decorative ceramic vase, then students can try the technique and put their own spin on the form.

Week 3 — Ceramic Picture Frames
Create a handmade ceramic picture frame and explore ways to incorporate texture, imagery, pattern, and personal details. This project offers an opportunity to experiment with surface design while creating something meaningful and functional.

Week 4 — Choose Your Final Project
Choose a project you're excited to make and develop your idea with guidance from JoAnn. Your final project can build on techniques you've learned during the class or introduce a new challenge. Students will have dedicated time to build, refine, and add details to their pieces.

Week 5 — Finishing & Glazing
Continue working on your final project and prepare your pieces for their final firing. Explore surface decoration and glazing techniques to bring your work together and give it a finished, personal character.

Week 6 — Final Finishing & Studio Time
Use the final class to complete any remaining work, refine details, and finish glazing. Students will have time to make final adjustments and prepare their pieces for the kiln.

Projects may vary slightly depending on drying and firing schedules, and students are encouraged to make each piece their own.

Whether you're brand new to clay or looking to expand your ceramic skills beyond the wheel, this class is designed to build confidence, curiosity, and comfort working with clay in a supportive studio environment.
