6-Week Wheel Throwing Class with Susan DeMay

Whether you’re completely new to the wheel or have taken a pottery class before, this six-week wheel throwing class is designed to help you build confidence, develop your skills, and explore what you can do with clay.
Led by ceramic artist and longtime professor Susan DeMay, each class combines demonstrations, guided instruction, and plenty of hands-on studio time. Beginners will learn the fundamentals of centering, throwing, trimming, and creating functional forms, while returning students can work with Susan to refine their technique and take their skills further.
Students who have previous wheel experience may explore more advanced forms and techniques, including altered and oval shapes, handle-making, and combining multiple thrown components. Susan will work with each student individually to help them identify areas for growth and develop their own interests and abilities.
The goal is not for everyone to make the same projects, but to create a supportive environment where each student can learn at their own pace, gain greater control at the wheel, and leave with a collection of work they’re proud of.

Instructor: Susan DeMay
Susan DeMay is a respected local ceramic artist and educator who previously taught ceramics at Vanderbilt University and Cumberland University. With decades of experience as both a studio artist and teacher, her work has been widely exhibited across the Southeast and featured in national ceramics publications. She currently serves on the Crafts Committee for the Smithville Fiddlers’ Jamboree and on the board of the Off the Beaten Path Studio Tour, and is known for her distinctive ceramic work and generous teaching style.
In the classroom, Susan focuses on helping students develop confidence and control while encouraging experimentation and individual expression. Whether a student is learning to center clay for the first time or looking to refine more advanced throwing techniques, Susan meets students where they are and helps them take the next step in their practice.
